Joint custody is when the parents share custody and both make the important decisions in the child's life. It does not necessarily mean each parent has the child one half of the time.

The court can change a custody order if it is in the best interests of the child, and if there has been a substantial change in one of the factors courts think about when making custody decisions.

Effective July 1, 2006, if a parent who has custody of a minor child or parenting time with a minor child plans to move to a new residence, that parent must file a notice with the court and send a copy of the notice to the other parent.

The custodial parent usually enrolls the child in school in that parent's district. If the child goes to live with the other parent, the other parent can enroll the child in his or her district.

Usually, a child should attend school in the district where the child's custodial parent lives. However, if the child is living with someone else in a different school district, the child may be able to attend school in that district.
